Zoom Independent Study
five Day CLASS
This is a fun class where students work on any creative project they would like, share knowledge and ideas with everyone, and totally immerse themselves in art and creativity for five glorious days, all in your own studio!
This Independent Study Retreat is a great opportunity to stretch, try something new, finish up UFO's, and have support and suggestions.
Each student works on their own project. You get individual attention from me when you get "stuck" or just want feedback. This workshop is not a "how to" class with formal instruction, but I am available to do demonstrations corresponding to each person's needs. Everyone is invited to participate in those demos if they are interested. I have invested in excellent equipment that allows you to easily see what I am doing and ask questions throughout. This allows for further learning and broadening of each person's knowledge.
We have critiques each day which are open to all of the students if they would like to participate. Each student sends me photos of what they are working on and I share the photos with the group. As I talk about the work, the other students can choose to continue on with their own projects while listening, simply do their own work, or put their energy totally into the discussions. It is almost like I am walking around the class working with each student and everyone else can listen in.
I contact each student ahead of time to discuss what they will be working on so I can be prepared to help during class.
Here are some examples of what students have worked on in Independent retreats:
Designing a quilt - coming with an idea and designing and making the quilt in class
Dye-painting - painting a large quilt with dyes (for dye-painting, you need to have tried the technique before the class, either by following my DVD or having taken a class from me previously, because I don't actually teach the technique in the Independent Study class, even though I do demos and we discuss different techniques of dying).
Designing quilting - figuring out and creating the design for the quilting
Quilting - quilting a quilt with help on color choices on threads
Drawing - going further in drawing to understand more about shading, perspective, portraiture, or color in your pencil drawings
Color - figuring out how to choose fabrics for your quilt with color guidance Wearables - making clothing from up-cycled cloth and clothing (great way to get lots of opinions and enthusiastic comments)
Finishing UFOs that were started but you just didn't know how to finish them
Pricing: $500 per student

testimonials
“I am planning to do another independent study in November. I very much enjoyed this one and having the zoom option makes it possible. I think the format works amazingly well for your purposes and does create community, as unusual as that seems to be.
As always I love learning from you and from what others are learning.” - D., South Carolina
“First of all thank you Hollis and everyone in the group for a wonderful Independent Study. Many have said it and I want to repeat that the support for each other in the group is an amazing gift – THANK YOU ALL.” - J., Indiana
“Thank you so much for a fantastic class experience! This is my first experience in an Independent Study with Hollis, and I felt very welcomed to the group. I so appreciate all the interactions over the last days, and I feel a great deal of healing in my heart. This has been a rough time the last few months balancing my health with all the COVID-19 “demands”, and the overwhelm of media, fear-mongering, on and on...having the grounding of “Hollis-ness” has been precious, and truly an oasis.” - R., Colorado
“It has been a really good experience with this Independent Study. I think this was the best experience I have had for in person class and remotely. Thinking I needed the in person experiences before this experience to lead up to this, but, I actually felt I learned more, listened more to Hollis’ comments to me, and, was able to be a “fly on the wall” listening to her helpfulness to others. I just loved this experience!” - D., Delaware
“Again thank you for a lovely Independent Study with lots of information on a variety of topics, and life issues. Such an interesting group of people you have collected with significant life stories. The projects were so varied which made the week exciting.” - C. South Carolina
