In person Independent Study Class

This is a fun class where students work on any creative project they would like, share knowledge and ideas with everyone, and totally immerse themselves in art and creativity for five glorious days!

This Independent Study Retreat is a great opportunity to stretch, try something new, finish up UFO's, and have support and suggestions.

Each student works on their own project. You get individual attention from me when you get "stuck" or just want feedback. This workshop is not a "how to" class with formal instruction, but I am available to do demonstrations corresponding to each person's needs. Everyone is invited to participate in those demos if they are interested. This allows for further learning and broadening of each person's knowledge.

We have critiques each day which are open to all of the students if they would like to participate.

I contact each student ahead of time to discuss what they will be working on so I can be prepared to help during class.

Here are some examples of what students have worked on in Independent retreats:

Designing a quilt - coming with an idea and designing and making the quilt in class
Dye-painting - painting a large quilt with dyes (for dye-painting, you need to have tried the technique before the class, either by following my DVD or having taken a class from me previously, because I don't actually teach the technique in the Independent Study Retreat).
Designing quilting - figuring out and creating the design for the quilting
Quilting - quilting a quilt with help on color choices on threads
Drawing - going further in drawing to understand more about shading, perspective, portraiture, or color in your pencil drawings
Color - figuring out how to choose fabrics for your quilt with color guidance
Finishing UFOs that were started but you just didn't know how to finish them

Date: June 18-22, 2025

The Independent Study class will be held at the G’s Quilt & Craft Retreat, 710 Miller Road, Hillsborough, NC 27278. This is a nice house set in the beautiful country area outside of Hillsborough. It is only five minutes from my house, so you are all invited to come to my house/studio one evening for a relaxing dinner.

Please find below more information about the logistics.

Schedule

The class starts at 8:30AM on Wednesday June 18th, 2025 and ends at 4:00 PM on Sunday June 22nd 2025

The travel date to arrive is Tuesday June 17th, 2025

You can come to the venue from 3:00 PM on June 17th to set up. We will have dinner at 5:30 PM and then a meeting at 6:00 PM at the venue Tuesday June 17th.

You will be spending five nights for the class (June 17-21). The night of Sunday June 22nd is not reserved at the venue and is not included in the cost. I recommend that you schedule to stay another night elsewhere if you are traveling a distance.

Please do not schedule to leave before 4:00 PM on the last day (Sunday June 22nd). If people start to leave early, it basically ends the class for everyone.

 Meals

The first evening we will have a soup & salad meal that we will provide at the venue at 5:30 before our meeting. You are also invited to our house one evening to visit my studio, have a home cooked meal, and a relaxing evening.

We will provide coffee, tea, fresh fruits and chocolates each day during the class. You are welcome to bring any snacks for yourself or to share. There is a full kitchen at the venue so the people staying there can prepare breakfasts or other meals. Everyone can share the fridge and warm up food. There is a good grocery store close by (2 minute drive, 20 minute walk).

Lunches: We will choose a restaurant to order from each day as a group (this is optional and we will have menus available to choose from). Reynald will be available to call the order in, pick it up, and deliver it to the venue. Please bring enough cash with you to reimburse Reynald for your lunches at the end of the class. We cannot accept checks or credit card for the reimbursement of your lunch expenses.

Dinners: You are on your own for the remaining three evening meals. There are many restaurants to choose from in the area at all price ranges. We will have recommendations and menus from different places available for you to look through.

During the last in-person class, we went to our son’s pizza restaurant one evening. We would like to offer this option also.

Accommodations

There are two options for housing. The first is to stay at the venue where we will be holding the class. There are four rooms available at $100 per night /single and $65/double.

The second option for housing is to find your own room. There is the Holiday Inn Express in Hillsborough that is reasonable and about 10 minutes away. Each room has a mini refrigerator, microwave, and a coffee machine. Breakfast is included.

 Cancellation policy

We have grappled with the cancellation policy for the Masters Art Series for many years. Unfortunately, because of the financial commitments and complicated logistics, we cannot offer refunds for any reason. We highly recommend that you obtain trip/travel/event insurance and choose a plan that offers the best options. Many plans will provide a full refund. We understand that students cannot control what could happen in life. If the class would be cancelled for any reason, you would be given a full refund, including the deposit.

Travel

Hillsborough is approximately 30 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International airport. If you are flying, we will do what we can to coordinate shared rides.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me (hollis@hollisart.com).

Thank you,
