West African Textiles

Description: 

West Africa has an extremely rich culture in textiles. It produces some of the most beautiful fabrics in all of Africa and is known worldwide for its traditional weavers, dyers and the elegant dress of the people. In this presentation, I will help the audience understand the importance of the cloths in West Africa and how much the everyday life revolves around them. I will also show a variety of  hand-woven, industrial woven and printed textiles from Mali, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Niger, Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria.

Teacher Needs:

  • Digital projector (with extension cord if needed)

  • Microphone

  • Screen

  • 2 - 3 quilt racks or quilt stands

  • 3 tables for supplies
